Westway campaigning pays off
Campaigners who have fought relentlessly to improve the safety of a crossing at the Westway, say their efforts have finally paid off.
Contractors have made final improvements to the precarious crossing where at least three people have been killed trying to dash across the high speed, six-lane A-road in Shepherd's Bush.
The Gazette and surrounding residents, teamed up three years ago to lobby Transport for London to make drastic improvements.
But it is only now, after heel-dragging by the transport firm, that residents are satisfied with the outcome.
Workers recently doubled the distance from the crossing to the traffic stop line to six metres.
It was the finishing touch to a series of slow-progressing improvements, such a speed and red light camera, plus a sensor which ensures pedestrians are safely across the road before a green traffic light.
Campaigner John Armstrong, 65, of Bentworth Road, said: "This is at least phase one of the improvements finally made. What we want to see done next is traffic drastically slowed down and a fence that prevents a car swerving onto the footpath.
"It's unbelievable to think that this has been going on for three years. TfL officers have been sitting in their offices wasting space while people were being hit and killed or seriously injured trying to cross this road."
A Transport for London spokeswoman said, the crossing had been upgraded to a puffin-style crossing in response to a history of speeding and collisions.
