Westfield makes ''irresponsible'' gaffe

Posted by Rebecca Kent on Oct 13, 08 12:42 PM in

Online instructions to contractors working at the new White City shopping centre about how to park in nearby streets were quickly removed following objections from residents.

Developers Westfield posted advice about using residential controlled parking zones near the mall until its car park is up and running, but removed the notice within 24 hours after angry complaints.

One Shepherd's Bush resident branded the posting "utterly irresponsible and beyond ridiculous."

It read: "Until our car park opens in October, parking is available at several controlled parking zones within easy walking distance. As Westfield spans two London boroughs, controls and charges vary."

The notice went on to describe charges, rules and times of operation of in Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea.

It added: "Bring plenty of change. In both boroughs, parking is unrestricted and free to any vehicle outside the hours of operation."

A Westfield spokeswoman said it was put up in error and not intended as shopper information.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council spokesman said: "Obviously, parking bays on residential street in Shepherd's Bush are mainly for residents and their visitors, not Westfield contractors or staff. We are pleased that Westfield has now removed this statement."

The centre's car park will have 4,500 spaces and will open at the same time as the shops on October 30, although tariffs have not yet been set.
