Shepherd's bush Tube open
Shepherd's Bush Tube station is now open following a controversial eight-month closure.
It is the second of several major transport developments to open to the public ahead of the Westfield shopping centre.
The station, constructed in glass, steel and granite, with boosted security opened at midday last Sunday with the finishing touches still not complete.
However, the 80-year escalators have been replaced, the ticket hall doubled in size and the distinctive green tiles replaced with modern blue and white ones, all to cope with the extra 45,000 passengers a day expected when Westfield opens.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: "The station has been remodelled to the highest modern standards, and will provide a hugely important resource to both the local community and to visitors of the new Westfield centre, which is set to play an important role in the regeneration of the area."
But the event has been labelled a "partial opening" because it has no step-free access, despite initial artists impressions depicted the station with lifts.
London Underground has been lambasted for the unforgivable gaffe, but it says engineers are planning how to best install them. The estimated cost is £100 million.
Pamela Scott from Shepherd's Bush said: "I went through on Sunday night and it was well-lit and looked really modern. There were already quite a few people there. The tiles were really white. I was very impressed."
The new Wood Lane station on the Hammersmith and City line is expected to open on Sunday.
