Police cycle to Paris for a good cause
A group of police officers are to set off on a mission not to conquer crime but undulating downs - and possibly fatigue - in a charity bicycle ride to Paris.
The 11 officers, nine of whom are from Hammersmith and Fulham, will embark on a 650 mile round trip tomorrow in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for the shooting Stars Hospice in Acton, and the Jack Brown Appeal for the childhood cancer neuroblastoma.
The officers have spent a year gathering a team and training for the event since the idea first surfaced between colleagues Bill Heasman and Terry North, from the Shepherd's Bush Safer Neighbourhood Team.
The group have been trying to garner support in the meantime, and hope to raise around £8,000 through sponsorship, an auction and a raffle of donated goods, including a bicycle and football memorabilia.
They have all given up their own time to take the challenge, and have the full backing of the borough's top bobby, Chief Superintendent Kevin Hurley and his deputy, Superintendent Steve Cassidy, who have supplied a support vehicle.
The officers will set off at 6.30am tomorrow (Sat Oct 4) from Shepherd's Bush and plan to return next Friday (September 10).
To support them, phone the Shepherd's Bush Safer Neighbourhood Team on 020 8721 2056.
