Teenager commended for saving stab victim's life
A teenager who helped a man bleeding from a life-threatening knife wound was praised at a police commendation ceremony.
Despite having no first aid experience, Kerry Flynn, who was 16 at the time, held a scarf to the gushing neck wound of Vanildo Fernandez after he was attacked on a bus.
She was recognised for her swift actions at a special ceremony this week along with a host of Hammersmith and Fulham police for their bravery and vigilance in the pursuit of justice.
Ms Flynn, who was travelling on the bus with her sister, was upstairs and did not see what had happened.
As passengers rushed off the bus, she stopped at Mr Fernandez whose neck was gushing with blood as he slipped out of consciousness.
She said: "I was shouting out for something to stem the blood, shouting and shouting and eventually someone gave me a scarf and I held it to his neck and kept talking to him until we got him to hospital.
"The day before I was beat up by six girls and a man came along and chased them away.
"I stopped to help Mr Fernandez as I thought of this man, who saved me from more injury, but still don't understand why no one else did - they just stepped over him."
"I'm pleased about the award, but what I'd really like is to see him again and make sure he is alright."
The two thugs who, in a drug-fuelled and drunken frenzy savagely stabbed Mr Fernandez on the N97 bus on October 15, 2006, were later jailed thanks to the efforts of the police involved in the case. gathering by these officers.
